The adverse effects of some environmental chemicals are mediated through the effect of the chemicals on the expression and function of genes involved in the growth and development of the fetus, such as genes involved in growth factor signaling and hormonal action. The placenta serves as a barrier between the fetus and the mother and allows transfer of nutrients, hormones, and wastes between the two compartments. The proposed studies will evaluate the role of the placenta in the expression of genes affected by chemical exposure, with the specific aim of understanding the pathways and mechanisms by which the placenta mediates the effects of chemicals on fetal growth and development. The candidate is a biochemist with training in reproductive biology. The research plan is designed to address the candidate's long-term goal of being able to design and conduct studies that investigate the effects of environmental exposures on fetal development. The specific objectives are to: 1) determine whether maternal exposure to Bisphenol A (BPA), androgens, dioxin, and estrogens affect the expression of genes in the placenta, 2) determine if and how the expression of genes in the placenta is affected by maternal exposure to chemicals during pregnancy, and 3) examine whether chemical-induced changes in gene expression in the placenta affect fetal growth. This training will be conducted under the guidance of an experienced and successful mentorship team and at a large research-intensive university. The environment at the University of Maryland School of Medicine has a long tradition of strong collaboration between basic and clinical research, and is rich in resources for research.
